Lore

I was applying for scholarships, when I came across a rather fun one that asked simply to "write a letter to the number five.

Poem

Dear Five,

A number so sublime

half of ten

dividing big Ben

for you,

I'll always have the time.

-

Digit not occur to you

how we go hand-in-hand?

My imagination runs short,

so I resort

to childhood rhymes

drawn up in chalk

next to the hop-scotch court.

-

They'll chuckle and snort

and we'll just retort

that there's no more natural a number

than the soundtrack of our sum

Five plus one even

set to the beat of a drum

of a strum

of a hum

-

Say I'm out of line, but

a serif so fine;

Five,

I can tell You're still in your prime

-

we'll go back to our roots;

you were irrational

but I found myself

out in the field we played ring around the rosie;

the curls in your hair

but I was a square

So I said nothing

and nothing

and then nothing

and nothing still

And now I write to you

in crestfallen angst

imploring you

not to fall for those cranks.

-

Forever yours,

- The absolute unit
